The beginner’s sewing class is run over 3 weeks in the evening: 7.00pm - 9.00pm (Cost for this course £7.50)

This practical sewing course will help you become familiar with the basics of machine sewing and help you build your confidence using a domestic sewing machine before moving on to a simple sewing project.

Week 1:

  • Threading the machine and winding and inserting the bobbin in the machine.
  • Confident driving skills
  • Learning about fabric qualities and various machine stitches

Weeks 2 & 3:

  • Summary of previous week
  • Then utilise the skills learned in week 1 to complete a simple sewing project.

Once you have completed the 3 week beginners class you will be able to confidently move on to an intermediate class to progress further with your new found skills.

Machines are provided but feel free to bring along your own machine to learn all of its quirks.  Class sizes are kept small to ensure everyone can learn at their own pace and receive ample 1 to 1 tutor time.

The intermediates sewing class is run over 3 weeks in the evening: 7.00pm - 9.00pm (Cost for this course £7.50)

This class is aimed at members who have attended a beginners sewing class and would like to progress their skills.  Key skills learned through this course:

  • Refining sewing machine skills. Enhance your control, speed, and accuracy using a sewing machine for more complex tasks.
  • Building confidence through project choice. Work on a garment of your choice (a simple top/blouse, skirt, dress, or trousers) with guided support.
  • Sewing curved and shaped seams. Improve precision when sewing armholes, necklines, darts, and waistlines.
  • Using different types of fabric. Learn how fabric choice affects drape, fit, and sewing techniques.
  • Reading and interpreting commercial sewing patterns. Understand pattern markings, sizing, and instructions for garments such as tops, skirts, dresses, or trousers.

The Dressmaking classes are run over 6 weeks in the evening:  7.00pm - 9.00pm (Cost for this course £15)

The dress making class is ideal for someone who has intermediate dressmaking skills, you should be comfortable using a sewing machine and have made simple projects such as cushions or bags - or have attended the intermediate sewing class.

Key skills learned throughout this course;

  • Taking accurate body measurements and adjusting patterns. Learn to tailor commercial patterns to suit your body shape and achieve a custom fit.
  • Pattern cutting and layout. Understand how to place and cut fabric correctly using grain lines and fabric properties.
  • Garment construction techniques. Gain experience in sewing seams, pleats, darts, pockets, sleeves, zips and fastenings—depending on your chosen garment.
  • Hemming and finishing. Learn various methods to hem and finish garments for durability and a polished look.
  • Independent dressmaking. Leave with a beautiful made-to-measure item (e.g. dress, trousers, skirt, or jacket) and the skills to make more.

Class sizes are kept small to ensure everyone has plenty of attention and guidance and there may be a small amount of homework required each week.

This class is run over 1 evening: 7.00pm - 9.00pm (Cost for this course £2.50)

Bring along your sewing machine and we will help you with any operational needs you may have. This practical sewing course will help you become familiar with the basic features of your own sewing machine and help you build your confidence using it.

The course will look at:

  • Threading the machine and winding and inserting the bobbin in the machine.
  • Confident driving skills
  • Learning about fabric qualities and various machine stitches
