Supporting Our Community at Cairnies Quay
Members of Largs SWI have been busy helping brighten up our local community, with our adopted planters at Cairnies Quay, Largs now looking beautiful for the summer season.
A huge thank you to our wonderful volunteers Marie, Sarah, Margaret, Jane, Susan and Ruth, who worked hard cleaning, painting and planting to transform the planters and create a colourful display for everyone to enjoy.
We would also like to thank Brian and Joe from the CCC Men’s Shed for making and installing the plaque, continuing the fantastic community partnerships that help make projects like this possible.
Projects like these are a wonderful reminder that Largs SWI is about far more than meetings and activities — we are proud to play an active role in supporting and enhancing our local community.
If you’re out for a stroll along the waterfront, be sure to stop and have a look.

Launch Night for Our New Yarn Club
Largs SWI was delighted to officially launch our brand new Yarn Club at the end of May — and what a wonderful first evening it was.
We were especially thrilled to welcome Ailsa Stephens, finalist on Channel 4’s Game of Wool, who kindly joined us to cut the ribbon and officially open the club.
The evening was everything we hoped for — a relaxed and welcoming space filled with skill sharing, conversation, creativity and plenty of tea and cake, as knitters and crocheters came together to enjoy crafting in good company.
Our new Yarn Club is all about bringing people together, sharing skills and ensuring nobody has to knit or crochet alone.
We look forward to many more Thursday evenings filled with friendship, creativity and community.

The workshop introduced participants to a range of techniques for safely preserving seasonal foods, including dehydration, canning and understanding the science behind safe food storage practices.
The evening also explored the ancient practice of fermentation, with Tasha and Steve demonstrating how beneficial bacteria can be cultivated at home and explaining why fermented foods are such powerful nutritional additions to our diet.

Thank You for Supporting Our Summer Craft Fair
A huge thank you to everyone who supported the Largs SWI Summer Craft Fair in May and helped make it such a successful and enjoyable day.
We are incredibly grateful to all of our talented crafters who brought along such a wonderful variety of handmade creations, to our fantastic volunteers and bakers who worked so hard behind the scenes, and to everyone who came along to browse the stalls, enjoy a cuppa and spend time with our community.
The event created a wonderful atmosphere throughout the day and was another fantastic example of the support that exists for Largs SWI and the activities we provide throughout the year.
Together, our Christmas and Summer Craft Fairs raised an incredible £1,844.11 during the year. These funds play an important role in supporting member activities, subsidising events and helping us continue to provide the wide range of opportunities enjoyed by our members.
Thank you to everyone who continues to support all that we do — your encouragement helps make so much possible.

Looking Back – Our Wedding Dress Exhibition 2025
One year on, we’re delighted to share a new video celebrating one of the most special projects undertaken by Largs SWI — our Wedding Dress Exhibition, held in March 2025.
The exhibition brought together a remarkable collection of wedding gowns spanning almost eight decades, from 1945 to 2024, with each dress telling its own unique story of love, family history, craftsmanship and tradition.
From beautifully hand-sewn gowns created by mothers and grandmothers, to contemporary designer dresses and garments reimagined through sustainable fashion, the exhibition celebrated not only changing styles but the memories woven into every stitch.
Looking back, this was a truly special event that showcased creativity, heritage and community collaboration at its very best.
A heartfelt thank you once again to all the dress owners who generously shared their treasured gowns and helped make the exhibition such a memorable success.
We hope you enjoy revisiting this wonderful celebration of history, craftsmanship and love through our new video.

From Jams to Shimmying!
Our April meeting perfectly showcased the wonderful variety of activities on offer at Largs SWI — with an evening that couldn’t have been more diverse.
We began with a visit from Shelagh and Linda from Ayrshire Federation, who spoke about this year’s Federation Show, including craft submissions and the ever-popular jam and chutney categories that remain part of the rich traditions of Scottish Women’s Institutes.
Then, in complete contrast, we swapped preserves for performance as Shona led us through a fabulous Belly Dancing workshop full of laughter, energy and plenty of shimmying!
One member summed up the evening perfectly:
“Brilliant 👏”
A fun-filled evening celebrating friendship, learning new skills, tradition and trying something completely different together. We had an absolute blast!

March Meeting - Decoupage with Upcycled by Linda
March Meeting Round-Up – An Evening of Creativity with Upcycled by Linda
Our March meeting was another wonderful evening of creativity, friendship and learning as members came together for a Decoupage Workshop with Upcycled by Linda.
Using beautiful shells as the base, everyone had the opportunity to create their own decorative trinket holder, carefully selecting images and adding their own personal style to produce something completely unique. It was fantastic to see so much creativity around the room, with Linda delivering to her largest class yet.
A huge thank you to Linda for leading such an enjoyable and inspiring session.
We were also delighted to welcome seven new visitors to Largs SWI this month and, as always, it was lovely to hear such positive feedback from those joining us for the first time.
Here’s what some of our members had to say about the evening:
“Superb evening. Thoroughly enjoyed learning and practicing découpage. Linda was an exceptional teacher.”
“Really enjoyed the night. Linda was lovely, very helpful and interesting.”
Evenings like these remind us what Largs SWI is all about — bringing women together to learn new skills, make friendships, share experiences and enjoy trying something different in a warm and welcoming environment.
Next month we’re doing something completely different…

Staying Cyber Safe at Largs SWI
This month we turned our attention to something that affects us all — how to stay cyber safe.
We were delighted to welcome Liz Pryce, who delivered an entertaining, eye-opening and wonderfully practical session on spotting scams, protecting our data, and staying confident online. Her advice was full of real-world examples and simple tips we can all use — from recognising suspicious emails to safeguarding personal information.
If you’d like to explore further, the UK National Cyber Security Centre has excellent, easy-to-follow advice here:

Our monthly “Tradition” theme brought plenty of laughs, too! This time it was “Oldest Piece of Tech”, and you did not disappoint…
🎮 Roina took the prize with an original games console still in its box from the 1970s — a true vintage gem!
📱 Meanwhile, the sheer number of backup Nokia phones still tucked away in drawers was truly impressive… and slightly worrying! 🤣
It was fantastic to see 45 members come along for such a fun and informative evening — proof that learning new skills and sharing a laugh go hand-in-hand at Largs SWI.
Next up… 🎄✨
We’re already looking forward to our Christmas Party on Tuesday 10th December — mulled wine, cake, festive cheer and a wonderful evening together.

As you’ll see from our photos, the results were both impressive and hilarious! Congratulations to Lynn, Yvonne, Christine, and Susan, who claimed victory by a single mallow! 🥇😂
A special mention also goes to Mandy, who won our 2nd Anniversary “Cotton” competition with her brilliant and witty entry — a photo of Dot Cotton! 👏

Largs Museum & Skelmorlie Aisle Tour
What a fabulous time we had in our private tour of Largs Museum, thank you so much Linda and Maggie for the expert guided tours - it was fascinating hearing the history of what's on our doorstep.
Skelmorlie Aisle, built in 1636 as a private worship place and burial vault, was an addition to Largs Parish Church. It was such a splendid creation that when the church was demolished in the early 1800s, it was saved from destruction.
Today the aisle stands on its own, and comprises two elements. The laird’s loft is at ground level and contains an elaborate stone monumental tomb and an intricate painted ceiling. Below it is the vault, which still houses lead coffins.

Largs SWI Wedding Dress Exhibition
A wedding dress is far more than just fabric and thread - it is a symbol of love, tradition and personal history. Every stitch holds a memory, every detail tells a story. This exhibition brought together a remarkable collection of wedding gowns, each with its own unique journey, reflecting the changing styles, customs and personal choices of brides across generations from 1945 to present day.
From exquisite hand-sewn gowns made with love by mothers and grandmothers to elegant designer dresses chosen from renowned boutiques, each dress has been worn on a day filled with love and meaning.
Some have travelled through time, repurposed into christening gowns or passed down as heirlooms. Others have been generously donated, given new life by students who are reimagining bridal fashion with sustainability at its heart. This exhibition is a celebration of love, craftsmanship and sustainability.
It reminds us that a wedding dress is never just a dress - it is a piece of history, a work of art, and a treasured memory.
A sincere thank you to all our dress owners for sharing your treasured gowns and the wonderful stories behind them. Your generosity has brought this exhibition to life, allowing us to celebrate now just the beauty of the dresses but the memories and love woven into each one.

The night began with a Cranberry Mimosa (or a delicious mocktail for our drivers), and from there, we headed to the bar for even more delightful drinks. Carole and Dee kept us thoroughly entertained with their fantastic singing, and of course, we couldn't resist hitting the dance floor to round off the evening in style!

Largs SWI Launches New Sewing Club
The Largs Scottish Women's Institute (SWI) is thrilled to announce the formation of their new sewing club and the launch of their website, www.largsswi.co.uk. Thanks to generous funding from the Community Investment Fund of North Ayrshire Council, the club has purchased six brand-new sewing machines and all the necessary equipment to kickstart this exciting venture.
In a remarkable display of community enthusiasm, 78 women have
registered for the club within just 48 hours of the announcement,
demonstrating incredible demand. The first classes are set to begin on Thursday, September 19, 2024, and will be held every Thursday evening.
The sewing club aims to create a community hub for sewing enthusiasts at the Cameron Centre. It will offer classes for beginners, as well as provide inspiration and encouragement for more experienced sewers through weekly sessions. Initially focusing on general sewing, the club will evolve based on members' interests and will offer sewing challenges, technical help, and masterclasses. Due to the high demand, the sewing club hopes to be able to offer additional days in the week for those who can't make Thursday evenings.

We were piped in by Louis from the Boys Brigade, the haggis was addressed by Jimmy Law who entertained us along with Ray Connell of the Largs Cronies. This was followed by a fabulous pot luck supper with teas and coffees served from the kitchen by a team of very enthusiastic helpers and a Scottish quiz to round the night off. Thank you to Largs Cronies for the fabulous recitations, Louis from the BB for the tremendous piping, John McFarlane for the quiz and our helpers on the night for a wonderful evening of fun and laughter.

Largs SWI October Meeting
What a fantastic time we had at Largs SWI October Meeting last night! We were hugely entertained by Lucie Aitkenhead (pictured left) with her talk 'Living and Working on a Cruise Ship'. She spent 12 months on none other than Cunards Flagship Queen Mary 2 looking after nearly 1200 crew from 89 different countries. Throw in a trepidus high seas rescue in Force 9 gales along with very funny asides and we were all enraptured. We also found out why we needed to bring a toilet roll with everyone happily making a very stylish Halloween pumpkin decoration - seen here with several of our members.

Largs Women's Institute delighted over turnout
A NEWLY-FORMED women's group in Largs has shared its delight after a huge turnout at its first meeting.
Largs Women's Institute - formed under the Scottish Women's Institute - held its first meeting on September 6, when 66 women turned up - and the group revealed that it has the potential to be the largest in Scotland.
Sharon Murdoch, a committee member, told the News: "Our chairperson Wendy Cook enquired to see if we had a group in Largs. It turned out we didn't and never have had one."
"The Ayrshire Federation (who the group will work alongside) said if the group continues with these numbers it will be the biggest Scottish Women's Institute group in Scotland. We were expecting only 30 or 40 women to come along, but they were queueing out of the door which left us completely shocked."
Despite only being a newly formed organisation, there are plans for the future to ensure members are making new friendships and building on lifelong skills.
Sharon continued: "We asked people in the first meeting what they wanted to do and who could offer their skills, knowledge and talent to run workshops. We are in the process of disseminating that information so we can plan what women can do every month.
"We will do our best to provide what they want. We aim to have two activities in every monthly meeting where possible."
Sharon added: "We are still fairly small but I know the local community has a lot to offer that is valuable. We are looking for people to come forward to support us by teaching us a craft, or give a talk.
"We are also pleased to say that we are working with Councillor Ian Murdoch to help us secure some initial funding and build links with the Men's Shed which the women are looking forward to. It is all just exciting and we can't wait to see what the future holds for us."

First outing!
Wendy (Chair of Largs SWI) and a group of fashion forward ladies, went for the very first outing of Largs SWI to the Mary Quant Exhibition! Held at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum in Glasgow, took some of our members right back to their time as teenagers, featuring over 100 garments, accessories, cosmetics and photographs drawn from the V&A’s extensive collections, Dame Mary Quant’s archive and, following a public appeal, many private collections. A splendid day out!
